In today’s episode I take the time to talk about a question I get asked quite a lot:
“How long does it take to learn a handstand?”
This question is impossible to answer in a one-size-fits-all manner. There are so many factors influencing the time it takes to learn handbalancing. So the only thing I can really do is try to shed some light on the subject and manage expectations.
Here are some factors that strongly influence the time it will take for you to learn a handstand:
- Your movement history/experience
- The level of adaptation required for you to learn the skill
- Consistency
- Programming
- Social drivers
- Genetics (another factor I didn’t mention in the video)
So you see, all these factors are variables that make predictions impossible. I’ve seen people hold their first 10 sec handstand in a matter of weeks and I’ve seen people take 2-3 years with consistent training.
So I think the question that is much more important to ask here is: do you enjoy it?
The nice thing about learning handstands is that it’s a pretty straight forward process. And if you put in the work over time, you will get progress for sure. So don’t worry about the endgoal and enjoy the training itself. And don’t let yourself be fooled by social media ;).
I noticed while I was talking during the video that there would be A LOT more to say about potential influences on your progress. But it would have been way out of the scope of this video. So let me know if there is anything you’d like me to go into deeper. I will be happy to do so!
The world is your playground, so just go ahead and do whatever you love!

very useful article, what’s the benefit of learning a handstand?
Thanks! I don’t know if there’s really any benefit for learning a handstand. For a lot of people it’s fun and it becomes a passion. And it’s a good way of experiencing your body and gaining awareness in an unknown position.
